Bad but cherished Tuffy

I had such a horrible scare last week with Tuffy I still shiver thinking about it. The dogs are not allowed in the living room and we keep a “doggie” gate up. Well Tuffy always follows me all over the house and he thinks he is supposed to go with me to the living room to get the mail. (Our mailbox is right outside our front door.) I opened the front door to get the mail and opened it a little wider than usual to try to get a fly out and Tuffy flew out with the fly. I feel I am not able to go out on a rough terrain by myself yet and I could not go get him like I used to. NOTHING I did worked either. I called. I begged. I cried. I offered treats. I slammed the door (this always worked in the past). He got a taste of freedom and he would not come back. He was on the curb and with cars speeding by I could just see him getting run over. I was panicky. Just by coincidence (or was it?) our neighbor Mrs. Moore drove up next door with a friend. She said, “Genie (I HATE her calling me that but don’t want to correct her) isn’t this your dog?” I said yes and I can’t get him in. Well thank goodness, my kind neighbor and her friend started going toward him to pick him up. He was having none of that but he continued to bark at them and back up. They kept going toward him and he kept backing up until he was on the porch and he finally came in. I was so relieved and thanked them profusely. I love that little dog so much but as you can see in the picture, he is full of himself.

Cliff and I are planning to go see his Mother on Sunday for Mother’s Day. I hate to be away from my Mother on Mother’s Day but she insists we go then. I do want Cliff to be with his Mother on Mother’s Day and I want to see her then too. She is such a good mother-in-law. We will try to leave Sunday morning about 9:00ish and maybe get there around 4:00ish. My Mother is going to stay here and “dogsit”. :) I might not do very much blogging Monday-Wednesday.

Cliff and I are going out to eat tonight with our Sunday School class at Red Lobster. We go out to eat somewhere once a month with them and really enjoy it. Red Lobster is sort of expensive at night but we usually go to cheaper places.

Oh.. that is scary! We used to have a Cocker Spaniel who was an escape artist! My Daughter was just a baby then.. We had to give him to some friends who didn’t have kids, because he made me a nervous wreck running out the door every time it opened just a crack! Thank Goodness he’s home!!!

I’m glad your neighbors got him back in!

I don’t think I’ve been reading long enough… What happened that you can’t go out? Is it in your archives?

I have had arthritis since I was three and because of this and medications my bones are very soft. I fell in November 2006 and had major surgery to fix it and had complications, etc. To make a very long story short, the surgery was not successful and I had to have another operation in June 2007. This operation was very rare and extensive. I have a metal femur, knee and hip. I am horrified or falling so I don’t go outside without crutches and usually not without Cliff being with me. I don’t have very good balance and I do not want to do anything that would be a fall risk. I walk without crutches now except when I go outside. :)

Oh, the little creep! Dogs just don’t know how dangerous it is for them out there on their own. I’m glad it all worked out in the end.

Thanks Gina for your birthday wishes :)

Oh, woe! I’m so glad your neighbour was there.
Your story reminds me of the time I was living over a store, and my cat jumped off the balcony just before I had to leave for church. Kit-Kat had no way of getting back in, or even back onto the balcony. Well, I went and did my choir-member thing, but it happened to be Maundy Thursday, so Psalm 22, and at the verse about “dogs encircle me”, I broke down and wept. I’m sure the congregation found my emotion very touching! (And yes, I found him again after church.)

We have that problem with our new dog Laci! She’s a spaniel so she get’s so into sniffing up birds and rabbits that she chooses not to hear us. Still love that cute little bundle of fur though. I’m jealous….In my neighborhood my neighbors would just sit there and laugh while we chase Laci around everybodies backyard.

This is why it’s so important to constantly work on training dogs to come when you call, but some dogs just don’t learn! I had a husky that I worked with a lot on this, and in the house she’d obey, but once outside she took off like a wild woman! For three years I managed to keep her corralled except for four daring escapes. Unfortunately, she did get hit by a car. She recovered, but it was so frustrating to me that I couldn’t train that dog to come back when called!

WOW. I am glad you and Tuffy are ok. I didn’t realize about your arthritis.
